Master Classes

Apart from the four day Main Schedule, we also offer a large variety of additional Master Classes. Each additional master class is selected separately when registering. This is your chance to take specific classes with the teachers and/or themes you like!

NOTE! It is possible to add Master Classes to your registration anytime. There's no deadline, as long as the are spots left we accept more sign-ups. But don't wait too long, usually most of our classes sell out..please let us know if you you would like to be placed on the waiting list for any classes that are sold out.

Improvisation is an incredibly important part of expressing yourself as a dancer without the use of choreographed steps. If you have any hesitations regarding improvising, this class is a must...come find your voice!

Buck and Wing

So much mystery and mis-information surrounds the dominant tap dance style of the early 1900’s. In this masterclass Josh introduces the style as it was handed down to him by late vaudevillian Joe ‘Buck and Wing’ Stirling. You will leave with a better understanding of what Buck and Wing means, and how to get started. Wing exercises for all levels will be covered as well.

Syncopation is essential to jazz music and tap dancing, but frequently difficult. This class covers some basic ways to understand and begin to use the idea of syncopation. 

Sweat it Out Rudiments

Jason will be sharing some of the rudiments he has developed to help dancers refine their technical skills in an effective way.


Developing Speed

FRIDAY April 14th


Introduction to Improvisation

Come explore your voice and creativity within. Students will explore a safe environment to try ideas and exercises with the vocabulary they have. Sometimes the less you have is even better! 

Improving Improvisation......(ONLY 1 SPACE LEFT)
Teacher: Brenda Bufalino

Recommended levels: 3 and up
Join Brenda to explore a bit more of the world of improvisation. In this class you will focus on improvising with 8th notes and 8th note triplets instead of short percussive hits or tricks.

Having nearly 30 years of teaching tap dance improvisation, it is clear to Josh that you can’t teach anyone how to improvise, but what you can do is help and guide someone in to finding their way on how to improvise.  This class will offer helpful tips, hints and suggestions on all manner of things related to tap dance improvisation.

MONDAY April 17th

Body Percussion......(SOLD OUT)

In this class you will develop methods for creating new sounds using your whole body and not only your feet. Don't miss the chance to explore this ancient art form with such a skilled artist and instructor!

Phrasing with Melody

In this class Brenda will be sharing with us a Honi Coles swing chorus he created for Coles and Bufalino touring concerts.

We will work with Jumaane in this class, trying to individually connect ourselves closer to tap dance while exploring and discussing its boundaries though living in infinite discovery of creation. Great way to wrap up the festival!
